Packetization Schemes for Forward Error Correction in Internet Video Streaming
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this work, our focus is on video streaming applications with relatively strict delay constraints; for such applications, forward error correction (FEC) is the preferred channel coding technique to recover from packet losses. Moreover, since video packets are usually of different importance, optimal bit allocation across video packets results in different packets receiving unequal error protection (UEP). For Internet video, cross-packet FEC in addition to source packets can be performed by generating parity packets [1]. Alternatively, a source packet can be partitioned into different transport packets to achieve prioritized protection, which has been studied for scalable video in [2]. In this paper, we compare the performance of these two packetization schemes applied to single-layer video. The comparison is carried out in a joint source-channel coding (JSCC) framework, where error resilient source coding and FEC are jointly designed. We show that either packetization scheme may be optimal depending on the packet loss rate. 2. TWO PACKETIZATION SCHEMES

متن کاملAdaptive Forward Error Correction for Real-time Internet Video
Real-time video communication over packet networks is attracting a lot of attention for applications such as distributed collaborative work, teleteaching and telemedicine. Due to its sensitivity to delay, real-time communication is usually based on unreliable transport protocols, like UDP, since retransmission of lost packets is considered to take too long time. Instead of retransmissions forwa...

This paper presents a framework of content-adaptive packetization scheme for streaming of 3D wavelet-based video content over lossy IP networks. The tradeoff between rate and distortion is controlled by jointly adapting scalable source coding rate and level of forward error correction (FEC) protection. A content dependent packetization mechanism with data-interleaving and ReedSolomon protection...
متن کاملError resilience of video transmission by rate-distortion optimization and adaptive packetization
We propose new schemes to introduce error resilience into the compressed video bitstreams for transmission over packet networks. First, we develop an adaptive packetization scheme that prohibits any dependency across packets, for error resilience purposes, while exploiting the dependency within each packet to improve the source coding performance. Secondly, we address a two-layer rate-distortio...
متن کاملError control for Video Streaming with Small Data Units
In multimedia streaming, small errors are typically easier to mask with common error concealment strategies, but small packet size increases the overhead caused by network header information. To reduce the header overhead, large packets are typically favored. In multimedia streaming applications, every packet comprises ideally one individually decodable data unit only. Unfortunately, large pack...
